They seem to use it as part of the rhythmic glue of a track. Release / response time would be more about the BPM but I got the impression this was in reference to Techno style compression. Having said that there are still loads of people who do use the UAD/ Waves ssl comp to good end. I’ve not got glue but I know a few dnb producers who don’t like the waves / uad ssl style compressor because their recover time is too slow and I have to say my Tegeler Creme reacts way better to slow music than dnb.

Just plonking it on at the end and setting it to do 2-3 dB GR doesn’t seems to work in my book, it changes the sound and groove too much. I have previously tried ssl style comps on mix bus but I think with those you have to mix into them from the start. I did try Ubk 1 but prefer that on the drum bus as it doesn’t seem to react to sub in a good way. Novatron has become my go to comp really, so versatile, took me a while to get used to it but now it’s a top 5 plug-in for me. As you slow the release time the tune gets noticeably slower and smudgy. Generally I have it really slow attack (vari-mu range, 25-30ms) and fast FET style release (around 22ms). I have started testing using the compressor too and it’s quite interesting the difference in perception of urgency it adds to a track.

I mx into a Kush Novartron but with all settings off apart from the saturation stage.
